24. KNOWING THE UNKNOWABLE
âIâm sure Iâve found the settlement where the dogs are being held,â DâAngela said, blowing on her steaming hot chocolate as she led Robin and Marion towards the two big screens on her desk. âBut since Iâm not exactly flavour of the month around here, I want to be certain before I ask Azeem to put boots on the ground.â
âWhatâs the latest evidence?â Robin asked.
DâAngela zoomed the map until it showed a single settlement on high ground seventeen kilometres north-east of Sherwood Castle.
âItâs one of the three settlements Iâve been looking at for a while,â she explained. âI wasnât getting anywhere until yesterday. Everyone inside the settlement is using an encrypted data connection that I canât read, but yesterday there were two female visitors. I tracked them after they left and picked up their conversations on walkie-talkies.
âThe woman was joking that the men inside were Russian geeks, who didnât use deodorant and spent all day at computers. It seems the place was a tip and the women were sent in to bring food and clean.â
âSounds like hackers,â Robin said. âDid they mention the dogs?â
âIf theyâd mentioned dogs, I would be certain and my life would be easy,â DâAngela said. âI sent a TwoTu drone up there to take a look, but the footage didnât show anything interesting. Just a steep hillside with dense forest, blanketed in snow.â
âDrones are noisy,â Robin said. âThey might get suspicious if you send another one.â
DâAngela nodded. âI know.â
âSo, what are you waiting for?â Marion asked.
âNothing, I guess.â DâAngela sighed. âWhen you two arrived, I was checking through the data for the tenth time. I wanted to make sure I hadnât missed anything before I approach Azeem. Also . . .â
DâAngela shook her head and stopped talking.
Robin saw she looked upset and decided to push gently.
âWhatâs the matter?â he asked.
âI read stuff about Robin Hood and Will and Emma Scarlock before I came to Sherwood Castle,â DâAngela said, reluctant, then slightly angry. âI watched online video of the cash machine robbery you did with Marion and the archery range you shot up on Skegness Island.
âI thought I could be a mentor and teach real hacking skills to the famous Robin Hood. I knew your group had been stealing TwoTu vans for the battery packs, so I realised the thing you needed most was a reliable power supply, and I figured out a way to help you get it.
âI thought Iâd be appreciated. Instead, Iâm being marched in and out of the Nest like a criminal, not allowed to talk to anyone, and treated like some evil lackey for Rex Lairde and his TwoTu empire.â
Robin felt sympathetic. He knew heâd go crazy if he went days without being allowed to talk to anyone. But he also realised that a highly trained spy and hacker would know how to manipulate him to get what she wanted. And while he liked DâAngela and wanted to believe her, he had no idea if any of the stuff about her background and motivations was true.
